[44] A suggestion for his ancestry, based on coincidence of name only, is the following: There was a Kerstant Dammasz., beer buyer ('bierkoper') 1416-20, son of Dammas Zegersz. and Geertruid Codde; he died prior to 23-12-1390 married Nanne [Kan, ‘Memorieboek’, 185], son of Zeger Zeger Jan Godensz.; Geertruid Codde, died 2-10-1411 was a daughter of Kerstant Codde and Alijd; Zeger Zeger Jan Godensz. was a son of Zeger Jan Godensz., son of Jan Goden; see http://www.gironet.nl/home/philip40/Milet.htm

[48] The Van Bodegom family may be old. People with that surname were already known in the early 15th century in Brussels, mentioned in the Métier des maçons, des tailleurs de pierres, des sculpteurs et des ardoissiers. These artificers-artists, whose internal relationship is not ascertained, derived their name from the village Bodeghem-St. Martin, close to Brussels. Lodewijk van Bodeghem (circa 1470 to circa 1540) acquired the most fame among them. He was grand mason ('bouwmeester') of the duke of Brabant and built among others the palace of the Nassau family in Brussels and the basilic at Brou, Bourg-en-bresse. His son François became the ancestor of the viscounts De Beughem, who still live in Belgium. See Biographie Nationale de Belgique, II. 559.

[50] The coat of arms used by this branch of Van Slingeland was gevierendeeld: 1 en 4 in een rood veld een zilveren tempel in de vorm van een zuilengevel, met een kruisje erbovenop, en geflankeerd door twee torens met puntdak (Van den Tijmpel); 2 en 3: in een zwart veld twee beurtelings gekanteelde dwarsbalken van zilver (Slingeland); helmteken: een tempel, as helmet sign we also find een onderarm, bekleed met gele stof, paalsgewijs geplaatst, uit een wolk komend, de hand in natuurlijke kleur, die een zwarte kookketel zonder pootjes bij het hengsel vasthoudt, die van binnen verguld is, C. [51] The noble descent of the Aleman family was rediscovered in the 19th century, on which occasion two of the family members were raised to the rank of nobility as 'jonkheer'. The story is as follows. When Mr. H. van Wijn was 'pensionaris' of Den Briel, he met a farmer in Ouddorp and found a coat of arms in his place that belonged to the house of the counts of Hainault. He found out that the farmer belonged to the Aleman family, brought the papers with him and showed them to 'stadholder' William V. The latter invited two sons of farmer Joost Meyndertse Aleman to The Hague and placed them in Dutch Guard ('Hollandse Garde'), where they were soon raised to the rank of officers. One of these sons, Abraham Alemans, christened 23-10-1757 Ouddorp, was admitted to the knighthood of Holland in 1814 and died as a retired lieutenant-colonel at Ouddorp on 28-5-1835. See J. B. Rietstap, 'Alemans' in A. A. Vorsterman van Oyen, Jaarboek van de Nederlandse Adel, 1883. Two other sons of Joost's, Crijn and Teunis, came in conflict with the lord Van Wassenaer as bailiff and dyke master of Westvoorne in 1772, being charged of transgression of the ordonnance of the hunt in the Land van Goeree. They were found not guilty, however, and were qualified for the hunt as noblemen in Holland and West-Friesland due to their descent from Count William. See Algemeen Rijksarchief ‘s-Gravenhage, Archief Van Wassenaer 1891, no. 28 VIII g, proces-verbaal anno 1772/1773, Ouddorp in den lande van Goedereede, Aleman(s). On the 31-8-1717 a certain Dammis Claassen was charged in Wijk aan Zee for transgression of the ordonnance of the hunt, but was released and allowed to hunt with four dogs and catch four rabbits without qualification, see Wapenboek van de Nederlandse Adel, 1883, v. J. B. Rietstap, Alemans. Notary J. Barrevelt in Beverwijk passed an act 3-1-1718, in which Joost Engelen, 82 years old, and Jan Janse Nagel, 73 years old, declared under the swearing of an oath, that number 10 on the following attached list of descendants had been the grandfather of 'the first requirant', and that numbers 10, 11, 12 and 13 haer altyt met het wijspel ofte de jaght hebben bevoegt en het selve altyt onverhindert geexerceert hebben, and that they had numbers 10 and 11 seer familjaar en wel grondigh hebben gekend. The following list was made up on that occasion: 1.
